Piast Gliwice Stuns Defending Champions: Fortuna Polish Cup Quarterfinal Triumph

In the 21st round of the PKO Ekstraklasa, Piast Gliwice suffered a 1-3 defeat against Rakow Czestochowa. However, in the quarterfinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup, the tables turned significantly, with Piast emerging as clear victors with a commanding 3-0 win.

“Looking at the result, nothing from the league match against Czestochowa seems to align,” remarked Jakub Czerwinski, Piast’s captain. “However, up until the equalizer at 1-1, the game followed the pre-established plan. We were leading 1-0, but something happened there, and we ended up losing 1-3. I don’t want to dwell on that defeat, but we were appropriately motivated for the cup clash, and it showed in the result and our performance on the field.”

“Now, we have the time to celebrate. We deservedly defeated Rakow 3-0, and perhaps this is the least severe punishment,” he added, reflecting on the team’s victory.

At Okrzei, there’s a strong belief that defeating Rakow could mark a turning point after a sluggish start to the spring round. “Winning such a match at this stage of the Polish Cup brings immense satisfaction. Especially against a formidable opponent like Rakow. It’s very gratifying, especially considering how we began the round. Perhaps this match will be pivotal, let’s hope so. Let it instill in us the belief that we can earn three points in the league and score goals. I’m confident that morale will rise,” commented the defender, reflecting on the team’s performance.

The Gliwice squad caught their opponents off guard with their set-piece prowess. “While Rakow is also dangerous from set-pieces, this time, we proved to be the more threatening side. We’re delighted that everyone executed the pre-match plan flawlessly,” expressed the seasoned defender.

Piast is now on the brink of reaching the final. “We will approach this match and its outcome with humility. It’s part of the natural progression. Having defeated the Polish champions in this stage of the competition, we can dare to dream of greater things. However, for now, our primary focus remains on the league, ensuring we secure points there,” concluded Czerwinski.
